Diary News 37
- Ouch! - June 2003 Ouch! Well, it’s taken about 24,000 miles, but I’ve finally got my first major injury on board. All of the round-the-worlders have now picked up at least one nasty knock (although thankfully, nobody has suffered as badly as Jazz did on the way into Japan) so I guess it was my turn. I was on the foredeck in big seas and Force 8 winds, attempting to change the headsail, when we hit an enormous wave. The boat shot off the top of the wave and smashed into the water with a crash. When this happens (and we’ve got quite used to it now), the foredeck disappears from under you and you’re left suspended like Road Runner before gravity takes hold. By then, however, the boat is on its way back up having hit the water and you re-connect with the deck with a thud. Most of the time, it’s fine. Unfortunately, on this occasion, the wave was particularly big and I landed on my right hip on a sharp piece of wood on the deck. It hurt a bit and I was left with a bruised and swollen right hip. I was confined to my bunk for a couple of days (which at least meant that I wasn’t expected to unblock the heads for a change, but did mean that I was imprisoned with my wet clothes) and although I’m now hobbling around, I don’t expect to be allowed back on deck for a little while and, even then, I may not be my usual sprightly self.
